By midlife, many of us have accumulated a wealth of experiences that shape who we are. This rich tapestry of memories allows us to approach life with a unique perspective, a hallmark of what some call the “golden years.”
These four pillars are widely recognized as being essential for a long and healthy life. Let’s break them down:
Exercise: Regular physical activity strengthens your muscles and bones, improves your cardiovascular health, and helps you maintain a healthy weight. It can also boost your mood and energy levels. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week, making sure to move some heavy weights around 2-3 time a week.
Whole Foods: Eating a diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, provides your body with the nutrients it needs to function at its best. Whole foods are generally unprocessed or minimally processed, and they are lower in calories, unhealthy fats, added sugar, and sodium than processed foods. Remember, if it has a label, it needs to have the shortest list of ingredients possible.
Community: Having strong social connections is essential for both physical and mental health. Social connections can help reduce stress, improve mood, and provide a sense of belonging. Make time for friends and family, join a club or group, or volunteer in your community. Community is ever changing and can flow into your common interest to helping with the youth!
Purpose: Having a sense of purpose in life can give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning and can help you cope with stress. Your purpose could be anything from caring for your family to pursuing a hobby or career that you are passionate about. Purpose is also something that goes with the flow of life, it can be completely different from your 20’s, 30’s, and so on.
By focusing on these four pillars, you can increase your chances of living a long and healthy life.
